Water Heater Failure Risks

Modern homes in San Antonio have the luxury of hot water whenever we want it, and a lot of it. The most common water heater capacities are 40 and 60 gallons, but go up to 100 gallons. Many US houses have more than one hot water heater. That is a lot of luxury and a lot of potential water damage.

Most water heater failures occur when the water heater has reached its life expectancy and the tank begins to rust and corrode. The majority of water heater failures involve leaking many of those gallons down your walls, onto your floors, and under your carpet. Proper maintenance, including inspecting the water heater’s anode rod and flushing sediment from the tank, can delay the need to replace a water heater. Complete Flood Restoration can help if it does burst.

Two Types of Heaters

As consumers balance the need for water with the cost of keeping water hot 24/7, the market has developed two solutions. Some homes use both the old style and add a new unit as well:

  • Tank-style water heaters can keep 40–80 gallons of water hot and ready for use, so you can use the shower, dishwasher, kitchen sink, and washing machine all at once. When the tank is depleted, though, it can take an hour or more to replenish the supply.
  • Tankless water heaters begin heating water when you turn on the hot water at a faucet or appliance. An on-demand unit won’t run out of hot water, but it can’t supply more than one-two fixtures at once.

Managing Risks

Replacing a hot water heater will cost you about $900 – $4000. However, the average cost to repair home damage from catastrophic failure is about the same. Paying attention to the condition and age of your unit is the best way to save you money and aggravation. 1) Maintain your unit and 2) replace before disaster strikes.

A review of homeowners’ insurance claims resulting from water heater failures from multiple insurance companies around the country revealed:

  • 69% of all water heater failures result from a slow leak or a sudden burst.
  • Water heater failures cost an average of $4,444 per incident after the deductible.
  • Supply line failure was the cause in only 10% of claims, but these claims typically were 60% higher than those caused by leaking or bursting.
  • The age at which a water heater tank failed due to leaking or bursting was available for 32% of the claims. Water heaters up to 20 years old accounted for 95% of these claims.
  • Failures of water heaters located on the first floor resulted in 33% greater losses than those resulting from water heaters in basements.
  • Approximately 9% of all water heater failures occurred in unoccupied homes. This resulted in 49% higher claims.
